Years ago, a woman told me she was scheduled for invasive surgery due to a condition for which there was no known medical treatment. While she awaited surgery, I recommended a protocol of therapeutic doses of certain vitamins and minerals, because I knew that the medical condition affecting her was often associated with deficiencies in these nutrients. Within three weeks the condition resolved itself and surgery was not required.
A man with a 10-year history of high blood pressure wanted to eliminate his dependence on medication. We began weekly sessions of acupuncture combined with craniosacral therapy, along with dietary changes and nutritional supplementation. We also addressed the issue of stress in his life. With the help of his medical doctor, he gradually reduced his dose of medication until his doctor told him to stop taking it completely, as he no longer needed it.
A woman in her sixties came to see me about constant pain she had been experiencing in her abdomen for years. Her medical doctors had been unable to determine the cause of her pain and could provide no relief. As part of the initial visit, I asked her for her life story, and she tearfully told me about a traumatic aspect of her life that she had been unable to tell anyone before. The next day she phoned me to say that the pain was gone.
Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive approach to healing and prevention that offers safe natural treatments to complement or provide an alternative to conventional medical treatment. So many of the patients that visit naturopaths have conditions that were not helped by conventional medicine. Many are unhappy about side effects associated with prescribed drugs. Others do not like the long waits and short visits with their medical doctors, often feeling rushed when they try to discuss their health concerns. Naturopathic doctors have a different approach to health care and understand the importance of taking the time to listen to their patients. They address all aspects of a person, mental, emotional, spiritual and physical, since they are all intricately related to the well-being of that individual. And they draw on hundreds (and even thousands) of years of medical wisdom to help the body heal itself.
